Adams' season is over, says Newell

By Dave Bracegirdle

Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket Mick Newell has confirmed that Andre Adams’ season is "almost certainly over". The leader of the Notts attack has been troubled by a calf injury, first sustained in the drawn County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton three weeks ago.

Despite missing the county’s last home match, against Durham, Adams didn’t appear fully fit on the opening day of the current match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

“This is an important game and one that we need to win”, said Newell on the first day. “You want to be able to select your strongest side for the biggest matches and Andre was desperate to play in this one.”

Adams almost produced a wicket when his second delivery flew off the edge of Ian Westwood’s bat and through the slip cordon but he was uncharacteristically expensive as his 18 wicketless overs went for 82 runs.

The 37-year-old, who recently extended his Trent Bridge contract up to the end of the 2014 season, then limped from the field in the final session of the day.

After claiming 68 wickets in Nottinghamshire's title success two years ago and 67 last season, Adams was first to fifty Championship wickets this time around but will now end the campaign with 54 scalps to his credit.

Missing Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad, Samit Patel, Alex Hales and Michael Lumb for their final two matches of this season – and Australian Adam Voges for the last game, at home to Warwickshire – the loss of Adams is a further blow to Notts' receding title hopes.
