Harris considers move to Trent Bridge

By Dave Bracegirdle

Nottinghamshire have admitted they want to acquire the services of Glamorgan’s James Harris. The 22-year-old England Lions pace bowler is believed to want to play Division One cricket next year and has been linked with both Somerset and Warwickshire in recent weeks. Notts though, have taken their interest forward.

“We have met with him and made him an offer,” admitted Mick Newell, Notts’ director of cricket. “He’s a young player we admire who has the ability to open the bowling in four-day cricket and bat at number eight in the order and we are able to give him that opportunity.”

Harris was only sixteen when he made his first-class debut for Glamorgan in 2007 – coincidentally in a match at Trent Bridge against Notts.

Since then he has taken more than 200 first-class wickets at an average of 27, as well as appearing regularly for the Lions over the past three seasons, including a tour of the West Indies under the stewardship of Newell.

“We have put something to him and hope he’ll join us,” said Newell. “I believe he wants to make his decision by the end of August, so we’ll have to see what he decides.”

Ironically, Notts and Glamorgan (or, in the guise of their one-day name, Welsh Dragons) meet at Trent Bridge on Monday (27 August) in the final round of the Clydesdale Bank 40 group stage.
