Sales pledges immediate future to Northants
By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent
Northamptonshire batsman David Sales has pledged his future to the county for another season. The future of the 34-year-old former England A player was in doubt after Northamptonshire announced in July that they would be deferring a decision on whether to offer Sales a new contract and gave him permission to talk to other counties.
At that stage Sales had just returned to action after he had missed all of their Friends Life t20 group matches with a a hamstring injury, the second successive season he had suffered that injury.
But Sales made a County Championship century against Glamorgan at Wantage Road shortly after he returned to action and he has retained sufficient form and fitness to persuade Northamptonshire to offer him a new one-year deal.
Sales made a double century for Northamptonshire on his Championship debut for them against Worcestershire at Kidderminster in 1996. He captained the county between 2004 and 2007 and went on four England A tours between 1997 and 2000.
Meanwhile Northamptonshire have appointed batsman Alex Wakely, who has just signed a new two-year contract, as their official vice-captain.
Wakely will be deputy to Andrew Hall, having impressed as acting captain in Twenty20 and Clydesdale Bank 40 cricket this season.
