Waters and Glover sign new Glamorgan deals

By Richard Thomas

Glamorgan have signed up seam bowlers Huw Waters and John Glover on two-year deals that will keep them at the Swalec Stadium until the end of the 2014 season.

It ends speculation that 25-year-old Waters – Glamorgan’s leading wicket-taker this summer with 36 victims – was on his way to another county. That came after Waters had been given permission to talk to other counties in the last fortnight.

But the Welsh-born medium pacer, who missed a lot of last season with a back injury, has decided to continue at the county where he made his Glamorgan debut seven years ago.

Glover, 22, who made his county debut last year, returned career-best figures of four for 76 against Hampshire at Southampton in May.

"Huw's had a fantastic season, especially after the frustrations of last year," said Matthew Mott, Glamorgan's head of elite performance. "He's consistently one of the better bowlers on the county circuit, a fantastic pro who is committed to Glamorgan, so this is a great boost for the club.

On Glover, Mott added: "John's emerged this year and bowled well consistently. He's got a great temperament and his match-winning score at Northampton showed off his all-round skills. Although he's still inexperienced, he seems to get better with every game he plays.

"The club is continuing to finalise its squad line-up for the 2013 season, but securing these two players is a real boost for the team. We believe both Huw and John have a big part to play in our future."

Meanwhile, Glamorgan have dropped struggling opener Gareth Rees for their County Championship match against Eessex at Colchester, starting on Wednesday (August 15).

The left-hander has made only 358 runs this season in 18 Championship innings at an average of 19.88. Nick James is expected to open alongside Will Bragg.
