“I’ve heard a lot of chat about them targeting me in particular"

Joe Root has shrugged off the notion that Australia will be gunning for the England skipper.

“I’ve heard a lot of chat about them targeting me in particular" said Root.

"From our point of view we’ll be targeting everyone single one of them, we won’t be singling any guys out.

“Of course we’ll have plans in place for each individual player. Bring it on. You want that competitive element to it, those little in-house rivalries. They’ve got some great player within their squad, some good characters as well which I’m sure will make for great viewing.”

Root also confirmed that there will be no fear from his team when facing the Australian quicks.

“I don’t think fear is the right word. Respect is a better word. They’ve got a lot of quality in their attack but we’ve got a lot of quality in our team as well.”

Craig Overton has bowled himself into contention for England

England head into their final warm-up match in Townsville with the captain hoping to see the batsmen knuckle down and spend some series minutes in the middle. Mark Stoneman’s 85 is England's highest score of the tour so far.

“One of the things we want to get out of it is guys going on to and making big hundreds. That’s definitely the mentality we’ll have as a batting side and something we have to have through the five Test matches.”

Meanwhile Craig Overton – who took three for 15 as Cricket Australia were bowled out for 75 at Adelaide - looks to have played himself into England’s XI for Brisbane.

“Craig is playing tomorrow; he’s been brilliant he’s thrown himself into every game and opportunity whenever he’s got the ball. He’s really put his hand up to be selected and that’s what you want.”

England name XI to play Cricket Australia XI: Alastair Cook, Mark Stoneman, James Vince, Joe Root*, Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow†, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Craig Overton, Stuart Broad, Mason Crane.
