"I managed to make a few friends out there but I’m sure they’ll turn on me in no time!"

How fustrating was it that you did not play any Test cricket this summer?

The injury before the (RLODC) Lord’s final was really bad timing. Three days before the final and a week before the first South Africa Test match.

It is frustrating when it happens but it’s just about getting over it and making sure when you come back you are fitter and stronger. Hopefully I will get my chance in Australia.

What is your experience of playing in Australia?

I played a season when I was 18/19 for Adelaide University and three or four years ago played for two months in Newcastle for Toronto. I’ve had a little taste, so I understand pitches and conditions, and the people out there. ! I think the conditions suits my game and attributes and hopefully I can use that in the Ashes.

I managed to make a few friends out there but I’m sure they’ll turn on me in no time!

What role do you see yourself playing in the Ashes – shock and awe aggression or probing consistency?

One of my strengths is that I can adapt and do a bit of both. I have done both roles before, whatever suits the team, it is just about doing whatever I can to get in that starting XI.

How big a loss is James Pattinson to Australia?

I had a word with Vincey and Mal [Dawid Malan], saying it is pretty lucky [he won’t be playing]. I’ve seen him bowl some very quick spells this summer. Obviously it is unfortunate for him to pick up the injury, but in terms of our series it is quite handy!
