James Pattinson’s County Championship bowling average this summer. The Australian – who took 32 wickets at 12.06 for Notts – has been ruled out of the Ashes series with a back injury. In 17 Tests, Pattinson has taken 70 wickets at 26.15.


Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath has become the first left-arm spinner to take 400 Test wickets. Those scalps have come from 84 Tests; Muttiah Muralitharan (72), Richard Hadlee (80) and Dale Steyn (80) are the only ones to reach the landmark in fewer matches.

With nine 10-wicket hauls to his name, Herath sits alongside Hadlee (9), one behind Shane Warne (10), with Murali (22) way out in front.

Herath – at 39 years and 127 days – is the oldest to reach 400.

MCC have stated their support five-day Tests in a world where the game seems to be shrinking and the conversation for four-day Tests (rightly or wrongly) continues to trundle along.

MCC chief executive said: “It is a debate that is going to run but from our perspective five days Tests is what we would like to see continue.”


In 10 ODIs in 2017, Jonny Bairstow has scored 534 runs at 106.80. He hit his maiden ODI hundred against West Indies at Old Trafford and followed it up with a career-best 141 not out at the Ageas.

Durham batsman Jack Burnham has been handed a 12-month suspension from cricket after failing a drug test as part of the ECB’s illicit drugs policy. The 20-year-old tested positive to a recreational drug in September.


Sri Lanka Cricket has handed Danushka Gunathilaka a six-match ban in white-ball matches for misconduct. Gunathilaka has scored 509 runs at 42.41 in 2017.
