Job title: Art Director, The Cricketer Publishing Limited 

Would you like to be responsible for designing the world’s oldest and best cricket magazine?


The Cricketer Publishing Ltd is looking for a new art director. As art director you will be responsible for ensuring the magazine remains fresh, vibrant and relevant, maintaining the editorial and design qualities that have kept The Cricketer magazine in print for almost 100 years. You will be responsible for designing and laying out the magazine, creating exciting and engaging editorial pages on a monthly publication. As well as being responsible for the design of the magazine you will work closely with our marketing team to produce high-quality print and digital collateral.

The ideal candidate will have a growing reputation as a designer and will be passionate and enthusiastic with a positive attitude and an excellent work ethic. You will be the sole creative working on the magazine utilising external freelancers when required. An interest in cricket would be preferable.

Key roles and responsibilities:

  • Laying out and designing exciting and engaging editorial pages on a busy monthly magazine working to challenging deadlines.
  • Working closely with the editorial and marketing teams.
  • Sourcing and commissioning photographers and illustrators.
  • Checking over pages before they are sent to press, ensuring pages are of an excellent standard with a high attention to detail.
  • Communicate with printers to check and approve magazine proofs.
The ideal candidate will have:

  • A minimum of four years’ magazine experience and a portfolio showcasing exceptional skills in magazine design.
  • Creative flair and a passion for exciting and engaging editorial design including exceptional cover designs.
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, in particular InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Excellent knowledge of magazine design, typography, photography and illustration.
  • Experience in commissionin and directing shoots and illustrations and effectively managing freelance resources.
  • Creativity, must have the ability to think laterally and come up with great design solutions under tight deadlines.
  • Have a passion and awareness of the wider print and digital media landscape.
  • Experience of video, social media and other formats will be an advantage.
  • Organisational skills, be an efficient and excellent communicator with a keen eye for detail.
  • The flexibility and adaptability to cope with irregular working hours approaching deadline.

    £35k - £40k based on experience.

    Location and start date:

    This is a full-time position based in Central London starting in mid-September 2017. The deadline for applications is the 21st July – interviews will be conducted in the following two-week period.
