Kane Williamson is an injury doubt for New Zealand

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson could miss the second one-day international against England through injury.

Williamson is struggling with what the Blackcaps camp are calling a "mild hamstring strain" and will need to prove his fitness prior to the match, which is due to start at 2pm local time (1am GMT) on Wednesday.

Coach Mike Hesson said his team would undoubtedly miss their skipper, as they aim for a 10th consecutive ODI victory, but he still holds out hope that the batsman will take his place in the starting line-up.

"We are optimistic he’ll be fine, but we aren’t sure," Hesson said.

Mark Chapman has been called into the squad

"It would be a big blow.

"Kane is a high-quality player, but we have to have confidence in our squad as well.

"There’ll be some minor adjustments. But during the year, when Kane hasn’t played, we’ve been able to put in a performance. So it won’t be an excuse."

Mark Chapman, the dynamic former Hong Kong international who slotted seamlessly into the New Zealand T20 squad during the recent Trans-Tasman Tri Series, has been called up as cover.

"Chappy isn’t coming in for his first game – he’s played against these guys a week or so ago," Hesson said.
