Sri Lanka batsman Dhananjaya de Silva has withdrawn from his country's tour of West Indies following the murder of his father.

Local politician Ranjan de Silva was shot and killed by an unidentified gunman on Thursday, less than 24 hours before the national team was due to depart for the Caribbean, according to local reports.

An investigation has been launched into the incident, which took place in Ratmalana, a Colombo suburb.

"We are extremely shocked, perturbed and saddened by the great loss suffered by Dhananjaya and his family," SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala said in a statement, as reported by Reuters.

"Sri Lanka Cricket will take every measure to support Dhananjaya at this time of sorrow and grief for him and his family, while giving him time to overcome the great pain and suffering caused by this tragedy."

No replacement has yet been named by Sri Lanka Cricket.
