The batsman - who has played four Test matches for his country - will be available to play in all formats.
Kuhn brings with him 9,698 first-class runs, scored at an average of 43.48, including 23 centuries.
The entirety of the right-hander’s short-lived Test career came on English soil, playing all four Tests against England last summer. He struggled throughout the series averaging just 14.12 without passing fifty.
His white-ball career has seen him hit eight List A hundreds and score 1,403 T20 runs at 25.05.
Kuhn said: “I’m delighted to get the opportunity to play county cricket and I’m looking forward to joining the Kent squad.
“I want to contribute positively to the team and bring my experience from winning trophies in South Africa.”
Paul Downton, Kent director of cricket added: “We’re delighted to welcome a player of Heino’s quality and experience to the club.
“We believe Heino can complement our talented batsmen across the three formats and serve as a mentor to those coming through the ranks.”
